Volunteer Service: Unforgettable and Special “Yichang Temperature”
2018-12-03 10:24:42

  On Saturday, November 17.

It is drizzling in the city, with a maximum temperature of only 10 degrees Celsius.

At about 7 a.m., Guang Si (Ganesh Bahadur Damal), a Nepal student at CTGU, and Cheng Ming (Akhilash Purushothaman) and Chen Hong (Akshata Manohar Mahulkar), two Indian students at CTGU, had a quick breakfast and took a bus to Binjiang Park. On this day, they planned to participate in two large-scale volunteer activities.

“I am a volunteer in Yichang.” Putting on “little red hat”, the international studentGuang Si put a V pose against the lens. He was a frequent visit to the volunteer service team for seven years in Yichang.

“We want to be the most beautiful guardian of the Yangtze River shoreline, and the ‘spokesperson’ of the city’s image.” Guang Si said.

Being Warmly Treated Choosing to Join the Volunteers.

In early winter, the river bank was cold, covering with mist.

More than 300 “little red hat” from all parts of the city were scattered on the long river embankment. Like Guang Si and Chen Hong, they are all active volunteers in this city. Some of them are old people and some of them are children, with the umbrella in one hand or garbage bags in the other for finding garbage.

“Wow, everyone’s coming early!” Guang Si walked down the steps and quickly joined into the garbage collection team. He told reporters that the reason why he liked to participate in volunteer activities so much was inseparable from his experience in Yichang.

When Guang Si first arrived in Yichang, it was very hard for him to speak Chinese and he didn't know anyone. However, everyone was extremely enthusiastic about him. “When I’m in trouble, my teachers and classmates all help me enthusiastically.” In the communication with his classmates, he found that many volunteers in the school were enthusiastic about public welfare. Influenced by his classmates, he also joined the volunteer team.

At about 8 a.m., the rain on the river became larger gradually, but everyone was unaffected. Guang Si carefully picked up a piece of sand-stained glass from the ground and put it into the garbage bag.

“This kind of activity is particularly meaningful.” Ganesh Bahadur Damal said that CTGU has many volunteer teams. The International student volunteer team which he joined has more than 200 people, including Akhilash Purushothaman and Akshata Manohar Mahulkar. They have participated in a variety of public welfare activities: collecting garbage, regulating the traffic, giving tourists free tours, accompanying patients in hospitals, and helping patients with mobility difficulties to go out for activities and check...

“Because I’ve been loved, I know how to love other people better.” Ganesh Bahadur Damalsaid that Yichang, a city full of love and warmth, gave them a vivid first lesson.

Accumulating Little Merit, Building Great Virtue. They Growing up Constantly in Their Activities.

“Sweet, you laugh sweetly, like flowers blooming in the spring breeze...” At 10 a.m., Senior Apartment of Fushouju, Wujiagang District, was filled with singing and laughter. This was a performance for the elderly by several international students, such as Ganesh Bahadur Damal, who came from the riverside.

In the senior apartment, other volunteers performed compulsory physical examinations, pedicures and haircuts for the elderly. Chenshi volunteer team of Jinjiatai community also sent dozens of bags of rice. Nearly a hundred old people were sitting in the corridor, chatting, watching programs and enjoying services, with smiles on their faces.

“Grandma, how old are you?” During the interval of the performances, Guang Si, Cheng Ming, Chen Hong and 83-year-old Du Xiangying began to talk.

Chatting with the elderly in the nursing home is an activity which is often participated by the international student volunteer team. When Guang Si first joined the volunteer team, he was also overwhelmed by language barriers. With more chats, his Chinese level has improved dramatically, and he can offhandedly sing “Tianmimi”, “The Moon Represents My Heart” and other Chinese songs.

While chatting with the old man, Chen Hong, half kneeling on the ground, always took the old man’s hand. She said that they learned a lot of things that they couldn't learn on class through activities.

Accumulate little merit, build great virtue. Guang Si was deeply impressed by the volunteer activities. He said that these wonderful experiences made their lives richer and more meaningful.

Attending Activities for More Than a Thousand Times They Always Walking with Love

When Nepal earthquake happened in 2015, teachers and students of CTGU as well as many social caring people donated money, and the whole society showed great concern for the disaster area. Guang Si always felt warm when he thought of the scene a few years ago. The loving actions from all sectors of society in Yichang ignited his enthusiasm to be an excellent volunteer.

“Yichang is a city full of love, and so many people are doing public welfare activities, even a few years old children are actively participating. I was so happy that I can study and live in such a place.” In the view of Guang Si and other international students, the volunteer service activities have become beautiful sceneries to show the urban civilization in Yichang. Citizens’ enthusiasm for public welfare activities has always influenced them and made them aspire to be helpful and useful to society.

Since 2011, Guang Si has participated in nearly 200 volunteer activities, and his volunteer team of international students has also participated in more than 1000 volunteer activities. “We will stick to volunteering and always walk with love.” This is the common aspiration of Guang Si, Cheng Ming and others.

Now, Guang Si has been interning in the hospital and will graduate next year. He hopes to return to his hometown and become an angel in white to save lives. At the same time, he also want to set up a volunteer team to carry out public welfare activities in his hometown, and exchange and help each other with volunteers in Yichang.

“I want to be a link between the public welfare activities of the two places, making the world full of love everywhere.” Guangsi said that it was also the common aspiration of international student volunteers. (Reporter: He Guanying)
