Friday, November 30th, Cloudy.
At 6:30 a.m., Cheng Ming (Akhilash Purushothaman), who lives near the intersection of the Huanghelu, gets up and makes the preparations as usual, eating breakfast on the roadside and taking the No. 19 bus, and then transferring to No.B9 for internship in the Central People's Hospital.
In the outpatient building, Cheng Ming habitually presses the elevator, into the 21-storey cardiovascular medicine ward. He has been an medical intern in the hospital for three months, and there are nearly 30 international medical students like him.
"In the white uniform, I feel that I am a doctor!" In the cardiovascular room, Cheng Ming said happily, putting on his uniform.
Cheng Ming’s family members mostly work in the medical field. From childhood, he has been dreaming of being a "white angel" to save lives and injuries. In 2013, he began to study in the Medical College of Three Gorges University.
At 7:50 a.m.,the changeover time, several interns, such as Cheng Ming and Guangsi, Feng Yu and Annie, put on white uniform, waiting for routine ward rounds every day.
At about 8 o'clock, under the leadership of Wang Xinan, the chief physician of the department, Cheng Ming comes to the ward with the instrument. At this time, the 10-bed patient is lying on bed for rest. “How are you feeling recently? Is your chest still stuffy?”Standing in front of the wardbed, Cheng Ming asked in English. Despite the language barrier, he can communicate with the patient via the translation of the attending doctor, Wang Xin’an.
Among these foreign students, Guangsi always talks with patients in Chinese. He has been an intern in the Central Hospital for one year, the longest internship time among the foreign students. He knows everything from how to communicate with patients and what to be paid attention to in ward rounds. "Thankful to the hospital and my instructor. I have learned a lot that can’t be learned in class." Guangsi is grateful for the medical knowledge he has learned.
Feng Yu and Annie also say that although they have only interned in hospital for a few months, they have gained a lot, seen many advanced medical apparatus and instruments, and had a deeper understanding of the words "angel in white".
The 13-bed patient, who had previously been hospitalized, were here again on November 26th for his chest tightness. After having a detailed understanding of the situation,Cheng Ming, Guangsi and other interns compared the patient’s two hospitalized cases, and under the guidance of Wang Xin’an, they carefully did ECG(Electrocardiography)for the patient.
"You're great!" Seeing how carefully the overseas students check for the 13-bed patient, his family members repeatedly thumb up to show their compliments!
After the ward round, foreign students, led by Wang Xin’an, come to the catheterization room of the Department of Cardiology to observe the operation. “Our school has provided me with a wonderful internship platform and I have reaped much benefit from it.” Cheng Ming says that although the language is not same and it is difficult to communicate with patients. But during the internship, the instructor of each department patiently and meticulously take them to the ward, and teach them the operation of instruments, and other medical practical knowledge.
"Although I have only been an intern for more than three months, I have learned how to measure blood pressure, do B ultrasound, check the result of CT(Computed Tomography), and I have participated in many operations." Taking about the gains in the hospital, Cheng Ming is rather proud.
Cheng Ming remembered clearly the first time he entered the operating room. At that time, he came to the hospital for an internship only a few days, and he was informed that he could observe a brain operation. The operation lasted about four hours. He stayed there and observed carefully for four hours in the operating room."It's amazing, the instruments are very advanced, and the doctors have superb skills."Although he has watched many surgical videos and constructed some experiments at school, he is still a little excited when he is in the real operating room.
Nowadays, Cheng Minghas observed several operations such asgallbladder surgery, laparoscopic surgery, anorectal surgery, etc. and under the guidance of the doctors, he has participated in the work of changing dressings for those postoperative patients.
Cheng Ming’s desireis to be an oncologist and helpsmore people transcendthe trouble of cancer. "Iam dedicatedto learn more professional knowledge in Yichang and become a great doctor.", He is grateful for his learning experiencesduring these years in Yichang. “Thanks to Yichang, I am getting closer and closer to my dream!"(Reporter He Guanying)
