My experiences as an exchange student in France
2015-11-09 09:12:50

Known as the most romantic country in the world, France, it was still a distance place for me before I went there, though I had studied French for two years. Before, I thought it was romantic just because of its perfume, its red wine or its quantity of literatures. Fortunately I had the chance to study in France as an exchange student for one semester and had the chance to feel its cultures and its civilizations by myself in 2014. The university where we have been is Catholic University of Lille, a private university.

It was the first time that I have left my country to study and to live in another country.

At the beginning, it was not easy to commence anything; what’s more, local French was not facile to understand. Fortunately, the teachers of the university helped us a lot, and they have been responsible for our choices of class, application of the housing allowance, social insurance and other issues. In addition, there was a club organized by students in charge of exchange students, with whom we could talk about the French cultures, and they organized us to gather together, invited us to varied festivals, letting us further understand local life and culture.

Of course, the course was a problem to overcome, my principal courses were project management and marketing, and I took the courses with local French student. In class, one of the forms of study is discussing by group. In this way, every member should participle, at times, everyone has his own task to finish. The members in the group cared for me a lot, when I couldn’t understand them, they would explain to me, and encouraged me to make my own statements. In everyday life, what impressed me a lot was their manners. Whether you go to the cashier desk of supermarket or go to certain agencies, they are habituated to say "bonjour" (hello in English) with smile at the beginning, and when we leave, they will say "Bonne journée " (have a good time) Even if it is to go on a bus, the driver will say "Hello" or "Good night " to passengers. Personally I think that’s an attitude, at least to show the respect between people. At the same time, if you ask the way on the street, most people are also friendly, sometimes they lead us to the initiative. In everyday life, what impressed me a lot was their manners. Besides, at weekend or when I was free, I went outside with other students, in this way, I have also got acquainted with variety of people from different countries. And I have felt different way of lives and different experiences in the life by getting on with them.

Between the five months in France, I feel that being romantic is not reflected in rose, in perfume, but also it is an attitude for the life and for behaviors. I have met various people and different way of life, I have known about different experiences and different choices. Maybe we are small in this world, maybe we will experience certain difficulties, but what counts, that’s follow our heart, stick to it, and pursue it bravely.
