My stories with foreign friends
2017-10-27 16:09:37

My name is Zhangxin, a sophomore of college of foreign languages of China Three Gorges University. Having lived in Yichang for nearly two years, I was deeply attracted by the beauty of this city which enjoys the reputation of forest city. As the only one open and comprehensive institution of higher education in Yichang, there are a host of foreign students coming to our school every year which is a momentous step for Yichang to walk up to the world. Therefore, we students often have access to communicate with foreigners and establish good relationships with them. When it comes to this, I want to tell you about my stories with foreign friends.

In the first year I came here, I became a member of the Colorful Chinese Club in which we could make friends with foreign students who were eager to learn Chinese culture and teach them commonly used Chinese characters. Honestly speaking, there always exists discrimination against blacks among our Chinese. Nevertheless, through the process of talking with those foreign students, I found that many of them were friendly and courteous beyond imagination. I got acquainted with many foreign students who came from Bangladesh and were studying medicine here. So much as they loved their hometown for they could merely return once a year due to the remote distance. Besides, I knew a friend named Jamil who impressed me most was his diligence. Not being able to speak any Chinese words originally, though, he would observe my pronunciation and ask me questions modestly. Just as the old saying goes〝Hard work pays off〞, after a period of studying ,he could use some simple sentences to greet. In the meantime, we also built up profound friendship which might be unforgettable in my life.

Another friend I would like to refer to is Sarah, a lively girl from South Korea, the meeting with whom was fortuitous. It was in a coffee bar where I met Sarah who happened to find no money when paying for the bills. Without hesitation, I helped her out. And it was not until chatting with her that I knew that she was an exchange student in our university. Moreover, she expressed her love towards China and gratitude to all the people that had given a hand to her. Since Sarah and I talked on WeChat occasionally, we have become intimate friend. At the time when she left for South Korea, she prepared a present for me with the hope that we would meet again in South Korea one day.

In recent years, it has been a tradition of our university that we will hold the Peach Blossom Cultural Festival in April which offers a platform for foreigners from various countries to display their exotic customs and special food. And it was my great honor to have a chance to volunteer in last festival which left me an extraordinary experience. On account of taking charge of Indian stall, what I was supposed to do was assisting the owner to decorate the stall and receive the tourists. Sumon, the owner of the Indian stall, was so amicable and hospitable that he constantly asked me about the taste of Chinese in order to make his food more acceptable. On the day of the festival, Sumon and his friends performed the Indian dance which won warm applause of tourists. Undoubtedly, this festival achieved complete ceremony in our joint efforts. Whenever I recall that matter, I will remember the kindness of my foreign friends.

From the experience of making friends with foreign students, I have learnt disparate culture and their love of our university, our city and our country. Still, the fact can not be missed that it is owing to the internationalization of Yichang that more and more foreign students come here for study. For the sake of accelerating the pace of Yichang’s construction, not only should we attach importance to improve ourselves but also absorb the foreign culture to strive for a better prospect.
