He, more than seventy years old, is still doing something on his life journey. Most people will say, he is working in Yi Chang, however,he said that he is not working but enjoying life here.
He is Peter, my international teacher, teaching us lessons about linguistics.
Peter's class can be described like this, according to my experience, “a solemn speech inserted many funny stories.” When I first came to this class, our teacher told us that Peter's class would have high requirements, especially about reading. So with very serious attitude, I went to this class. What I saw was a kind, responsible and considerate grandfather.
In the first class, he told us his plan about this course in a very systematic and detailed way. In the following weeks, he taught us some fundamental issues and theories about Western Linguistics、Animal Languages、Child Language and Cognitive Linguistics. He prepared these materials and printed out them for us. This was the first time I learnt these knowledge systematically.
What I like most is the form of his class. Peter would take care of each student. We seated around him and everyone had opportunity to exchange views, expressing our points any time. So after class, one essential thing we need to do is reading. Even I can say reading is almost Peter's motto. He attaches great important on it, emphasizing it again and again. Actually, I am influenced by this very much. He told us we do not have language environment. So we can only improve English through reading. He suggested that we could write something to him about what we read or anything we want. Then he would correct the basic mistakes and talked with us about the content. In the beginning, I just wanted to finish his task. But in this process, l began to love reading and had more motivation to talk and read.
After class, he is our friend. He gave us a chance that we can meet him once a week to practice our oral English, talking the content of our reading or anything we want. This is the first time that Icould communicate with an international teacher, sitting together and talkingabout anything. Ikeep this habit to meet him every week, gradually enhancing my English and my way of communicating with friends, especially those from other countries.

What’s more, he is so kind that every student is willing to exchange ideas with him. And also we could eat together like friends though he cannot eat too much. Every time he would not let students pay for it. Even though there were many culture differences, such as eating habits, time schedule, way of talking and so on, he still understood us and got along with us patiently.
Above all, Peter is a kind teacher and a good friend who let me know the importance of reading by his own action. I think he did not only teach us knowledge, but also told us how to learn, how to communicateand how to make progress.(Xiaofang Xie)
