Yichang is high in the west with mountainous areas and low in the east with hills and plains. Under the control of the humid subtropical monsoon climate, the annual average temperature is 13℃-18℃. Yichang is endowed with abundant precipitation and humid and warm weather which provide suitable growth conditions for many creatures. The rate of forest coverage reaches 58%; the volume of living woods is 50.56 million cubic meters. In some places such as Houhe of Wufeng County, the primeval forests of more than 24666.6 hectares left over from the quaternary glacial period are still remained. 6 national forest parks including Three Gorges Dam Forest Park, Old Grand Range Forest Park, Chaibuxi Canyon Forest Park, Yuquan Mountain Forest Park , Longmen River Forest Park and Qingjiang River Forest Park and 1 national natural reserve area (Houhe Natural Reserve Area) are built in which more than 20 species of rare animals and over 3000 kinds of higher rare plants live. Particularly, the 37.3 hectares rare and precious trees such as Davidia involucrata in Houhe, Wufeng County surviving from the quaternary glacial period more than 100 million years ago are very rare plant species in the 30 degrees north latitude, known as the "living fossil" of plants and the world cultural heritage in natural ecology. In addition, some native and special products in Yichang such as the orange, tea, mushrooms and silkworn cocoon enjoy good reputation both at home and abroad.
