17 kilometers away from Yiling District, Golden Lion Cave, a scenic masterpiece of nature, is in the gateway of the Xiling Gorge on the Yangtze River. According to classics textual research, this splendid limestone cave, formed about 1 million years ago, can be rated as the oldest limestone cave in Hubei Province.
The developed space of Golden Lion Cave is over 200, 000 cub meters which is 1853m in depth, 48m in width and 59m in height. It has been divided into three main layers—— the upper layer, the middle layer, and the lower layer.
Golden Lion Cave is a typical karst cave, formed by longstanding corrosion of the underground water in limestone area. The insoluble calcium carbonate in lime-rock has been converted into slightly soluble calcium bicarbonate when interacting with water and carbon dioxide, which shaped tremendous spectacular stone bells, stone pillars, stalagmites and so on. In the middle of the cave, a two-meter lion-shaped stalagmite soars in the water which names the cave “Golden Lion”.
