Situated at the east end of Xiling Gorge, the Nanjinguan Grand Valley is the natural exit of the Three Gorges. As sheer cliffs close in on the river, the Nanjinguan Grand Valley’s banks are difficult to access, which makes it a natural military parclose in the ancient China, a narrow neck of a flask curbing the mighty Yangtze waters. The valley is flanked by sheer cliffs and bizarre-shaped peaks so that the river channel here narrows into a bottleneck. This forms a natural dividing line between the upper and middle Yangtze. Its strategic importance makes Nanjinguang Grand Valley a place contested by rival armies since ancient times. Rushing out of the Nanjinguan Grand Valley, the Yangtze bends sharply southward. Then the mountains stretch away and the river widens abruptly. The valley is a vantage point for viewing the Gezhouba Dam.
