Guanling in Dangyang(3A-class)
2018-06-20 10:17:33

As a key cultural relic’s site under the state protection, Guanling is located at the sub-district office of Yuquan, Dangyang, about three kilometers away from Dangyang’s urban area and seventy kilometers away from that of Yichang. It is a kind of temple-like complex where the headless body of Guanyu, a famous general of Shu Han in Three Kingdom Period was buried. Originally, Guanling was a grave mound in the Three Kingdom Period. In the 15th year of Emperor Chunxi of the Southern Song Dynasty (1188), feudal lords guarding Jingmen began to build pavilions in front of mausoleum; from the beginning of Yuan Dynasty to the 14th year of Yuan (1188), Huizhen, the head monk of Yuquan Temple renovated the passage and door of the mausoleum and dispatched monks to guard it. In the third year of Emperor Chenghua of Ming Dynasty (1467), the county magistrate in Dangyang renovated the mausoleum of King of Wu’an and set up a temple for spring and autumn sacrifices; and in the fifteenth year of Emperor Jiajing of Qing Dynasty (1536), a relatively large-scale complex was built with the coverage of 46,000 square meters. Facing the east, this ancient complex of Guanling is a kind of typical official architecture since the Ming and Qing Dynasties with a mausoleum pattern of axial symmetry. It is of typical and beautiful southern style with cornices brackets, pyramidal roof, red walls and yellow tiles. The complex in general is characterized by delicate sculpture, rich content, superb workmanship and unique structure. Lying in sequence on the central axis are the square, Xinmen Building, Shendaobei Pavilion, Shifang Ornamental Column, Sanyuanmen, Great Hall, Worship Hall, Main Hall and Bedding Hall where Guanyu rests after his death. There are also annexes on both sides of wing-rooms.
