2025-12-26 11:24:11

Nanjinguan Grand Canyon is situated on the northern bank at the eastern mouth of Xiling Gorge in Yiling District, Yichang City, Hubei Province. It is approximately 20 kilometers from both downtown Yichang and the Three Gorges Dam, about a 30- to 40-minute drive.

The canyon extends for roughly 8 kilometers with a vertical drop of 400 meters. Its varied landscape, where broad U-shaped valleys alternate with deep V-shaped gorges, creates a steep and picturesque scene, making it a distinctive geological attraction along the Yangtze River.

In terms of historical significance, the Northern Song Dynasty writer Ouyang Xiu (1007–1072) visited the area and composed poems here. In 1910, the British botanist and explorer Ernest Henry Wilson also passed through the canyon during his expedition in western Hubei. His records contribute to the site’s significance in the history of natural exploration.

Blanketed in lush vegetation and filled with crisp air, the canyon is a well-preserved mountain ecosystem. Focused on outdoor adventure and ecological experience, it is listed as one of “China’s Top 10 Outdoor Adventure Routes.” Available activities include:

•Hiking & Sightseeing: Walk along canyon trails to enjoy streams, cliffs, and forest views.

•Water Play & Relaxation: Rest and play in shallow stream areas.

•Canyoning & Cliff Jumping: Ideal in summer, involving descending along the stream, jumping, and swimming.

•Rock Adventure: Features climbing and rappelling routes.

•Zip-lining & Forest Exploration: Traverse through the forest via ropes and zip lines.

Additionally, the scenic area organizes nature-based educational programs and forest wellness activities, suitable for families, school groups, and teams. The scenic area also provides “capsule” pod-style lodges for accommodation.Designed with a modern aesthetic, the rooms feature panoramic windows, perfect for enjoying the landscape and stargazing at night.

Combining stunning Yangtze River scenery, outdoor sports and cultural heritage, Nanjinguan Grand Canyon—often called the “Back Garden of Yichang”—is an ideal destination for nature and adventure enthusiasts and a representative outdoor destination in the Three Gorges region.
