Liu Depei

Liu Depei (1912-2000), a famous storyteller from Changleping Town of Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County. In 1998, Liu Depei was recognized as the first one of the Top 10 Chinese Storytellers by the UNESCO and the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association. He was praised as the most pride-worthy and the greatest encyclopedic folk artist in the world.

He has contributed to transmission of 512 folk tales, over 1,000 pieces of ballads, more than 2,000 proverbs, 800 puzzles, 5 volumes of shadow puppetry opera scripts and a large volume of folk culture document in total; and based on his narration, The New Hall of Laughter was compiled and published in 480,000 Chinese characters and was well accepted at home and abroad. In 2002, the Exhibition Hall of Folk Storyteller Liu Depei was built and opened to the public in Yuyangguan Town of Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County as the first memorial hall of its sort in China.
