
Wang Zhaojun, also named "Qiang", born in Nanjun (present-day Xingshan County), is one of the "Four Beauties" in ancient China. Zhaojun was also referred to as "Mingfei" in the Jin Dynasty to avoid using the character of "zhao" appearing in the name of the then Emperor of the Jin Dynasty (Sima Zhao). Finally, she as married to the then chieftain of the Huns, and the story of "Zhaojun Departing the Frontier" has been well known in the history of China.
The merits of Wang Zhaojun lies not only in her volunteer marriage to the then chieftain of the Huns, but also her contributions to the peace of 50 years between the Han Dynasty and the Huns, and exchanges and communication between the central China with the border areas as well. Hence, she was historically praised by many poets, among whom, Zhao Jie, a poet in the Yuan Dynasty once wrote a poem to compare her with Huo Qubing, a great general of the Han Dynasty. Roughly accounted, over 700 verses and nearly 40 novels, folk stories has been created in praise of Wang Zhaojun, and more than 500 renowned people thought highly of her action of volunteer marriage to the border ethnic group of the Huns, such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi, Li Shangyin, Cai Yong, Wang Anshi and Yelu Chucaiin ancient times, Guo Moruo, Cao Yu, Tian Han, Jian Bozan, Fei Xiaotong, and Lao She in modern times.
