Liuzi play of Tujia Ethnic, popular in Wufeng County, commonly called “Wei Drum” or “Playing Liuzi”, is usually performed by 4 to 5 people, playing such instruments as drum, gong, double cymbals (the first and the second cymbals), and horse gong. There are nearly 100 songs (Classics of gong and drum), their rhythms changeable and strong with great flow. The play can show a variety of vivid images and tastes by making full use of changes in speed, timbre, strength, and rhythm. The music is highly expressive and imitative, especially when the double cymbals are used to imitate birds and animals, and many its songs are also named after animal dynamics, such as "The Balanced Swallow", "The Flashed Phoenix", "Fighting between Dragon and Tiger", "The Bathing Myna" and "The Upturning Sparrow Hawk", making the music vivid and moving.
The music, closely linked with local people’s living customs, is an indispensable part of folk ceremonies, like in the playing with lanterns at Spring Festival, at wedding sand funerals, on birthday congratulations and in building houses.
