In traditional Chinese culture, dragons hold auspicious power, strength and good luck, and the parents believe the icon of Chinese emperors symbolizes power and wealth and giving birth to their babies in the year of dragon will bestow their children’s bright future.
According to statistics, over 6,300 newborns, 1,500 more than that of last year, were born in Yichang’s Central Hospital, the No.1 and No.2 People’s Hospitals and the Women\'s and Children\'s Hospital this year, and many expectant parents are eager to bring their dragon babies into the world at the end of the year of dragon, the would-be parents booking beds in advance before spring festival, which leads to the year-end shortage of beds in the delivery rooms of all the hospitals.
Experts suggest that more care be given to the health of children then their birthpet symbols, because health is far more important compared to the year of birth; therefore, a baby should be given a birth in the way of letting the accouchement take its course.
As Professor Chen Yunpu, a scholar on sociology at China Three Gorges University pointed out, last baby boom appeared in the 1980s, and the post-80s generation are actually in the period of reproductive years, as causes the rise of the large population birth base; the fact that the same year is chosen for the birth of so many babies may give rise to a series of chain reaction as well as some social problems.
