Three Gorges Hydropower Station at Full Capacity: Generating 0.54 Billion Kilowatt-ho
2013-08-17 07:40:21

It was informed from China Three Gorges Corporation on July 25 that the Three Gorges Hydropower Station is operating at full capacity of generating hydroelectric power after several rounds of flood crests arrived at the reservoir. Thirty-two generating units each with 700 thousand kilowatt (KW) and two power supply units each with 50 thousand KW can totally produce energy of 22.50 million KW and generate 0.54 billion kilowatt-hour each day.

Since July 19, the water inflow into the dam reservoir continues to stay at a high level, with basically over forty thousand cubic meters per second. As one of the dam’s functions, containing water from summer flooding is now in full play, the water level in the dam reservoir is continuously rising. Until the evening of July 24, the height of water between upper stream and downstream of the dam gradually grows to eighty-five meters, which has met the condition for the units of the power station running at full capacity.

It is said the Three Gorges Hydropower Station is capable of generating 0.54 billion kilowatt-hour per day if operation at full capacity. And clean energy like this can be consecutively sent to large areas in China such as East China, Central China and South China through electric transmission lines, which will play an active role in alleviating shortage of electric power in summer and adjusting power consumption during peak period.

It is learned that the Three Gorges Hydropower Station, which is the largest hydropower station and clean energy base in the world, has generated more than 670 billion kilowatt-hour since putting into operation in 2003. (Reporter Li Siyuan)
