Yichang Plans to Build Non-motorized Traffic System

  Walking and cycling are green forms of transportation which are not only benefit to the air pollution and traffic jams, but also to people’s health. On November 8th, the newly published Plan of Yichang Comprehensive Transportation System (2011-2030) shows that the future network of walking and cycling system in Yichang City has begun to take shape. It is a new trend for the residents in Yichang to enjoy a slower life with the help of non-motorized traffic system.

  Walking and Cycling to Form Nine Non-motorized Traffic Areas

  The nine non-motorized traffic development areas are Yiling passenger terminal non-motorized traffic area, Three Gorges Dam scenic non-motorized traffic area, narrows flat lake waterfront recreational non-motorized traffic area, Xiling CBD non-motorized traffic area, Wujiagang urban center non-motorized traffic area, Dianjun riverfront dwelling non-motorized traffic area, Three Gorges Airport hub non-motorized traffic area, Xiaoting  junction non-motorized traffic area and Baiyang junction non-motorized traffic area.

  Waterfront greenway system is built by renovating and preplanning the riverways. The “Four rivers connected to Yangtze River” waterfront greenway system will be formed with the accomplishing of the Yangtze River Greenway, Huangbaihe River Greenway, Juanqiaohe River Greenway, Bailinhe River Greenway and Canal Greenway. Cycle tracks and tree-lined footpaths will be arranged in the waterfront greenways for fitness and amusement. Meanwhile, public rental bikes will be provided for improving non-motorized traffic system.

  Main gallery, connecting channel and relaxation way form the bike network. The main galleries include Yixing Avenue, Dongshan Avenue, Shuanghong Avenue, No.2 Xiling Road, No.2 Dongshan Road and Xiaoting Avenue. Connecting Channels cover Development Avenue, Riverfront Avenue, General Road, Wulong Road, Yuji Road (except the tunnel), Zhongnan Road, Shantou Road, No.3 Dongshan Road, Hanyi Road, Zhangjiawan Road and Yingbin Avenue. Most of the relaxation ways are waterfront greenways.

  Walking and Cycling, Wandering through Streets

  Besides the primary and secondary roads, the microcirculatory system of city traffic also plays an important role in citizens’ travel. In the plan, the walking and cycling microcirculatory system are required to be improved by getting through the dead end ways, opening closed city blocks and intensifying the road network. The walking and cycling roads are arranged in waterfront spaces, country parks, and lakeside to make residents convenient for their relaxation, fitness and travel.

  All the primary and secondary roads are required to set systematic, way-righted sidewalks and cycle tracks. All the city branches and dwelling roads are needed to set sidewalks, which are equipped with blind tracks and barrier-free ramps.

  In densely populated large business centers, office areas, public transport junctions, systematic and connected stereo pedestrian system, such as pedestrian corridors, will be built together with underground spaces, surrounding buildings, bus stations and rail transit stations.

  Adding Bicycle Parking Lots

  Where should we park our bicycles? According to the plan, newly-built housing estate should be equipped with perpetual ground bicycle parking lots; old housing estate should be arranged with public parking lots for bicycles; public construction, places of interest, parks and squares covered an area of more than 20,000 square meters, rail transit stations, public transport transfer junctions and bus stations with large amount of passengers should be provided with bicycle parking facilities and conveniences for the bicycle-parking and transferring.
