Many parents would like to hire a babysitter to help them take care of their children, but only to find that the monthly salary of the babysitter is even higher than that of their own. The reporters learned that some mothers born in the 1980s chose to quit their jobs and stay home to take care of their children in order to save the cost for the babysitting.
Young Moms Quit to Stay at Home Raising Children
Mrs. Lee, born in 1985, used to work in a telecommunications company as a white collar, and her parents are in Xingshan. Last year, Mrs. Lee gave birth to her daughter. Her mother came to help her with the child for three months, but returned to Xingshan because her father also needed looking after. Mrs. Lee and her husband had no choice but to look for a babysitter. But from Yichang domestic services market, they learned that the monthly salary of the babysitter is over 2,000 RMB yuan, without doing any other chores. Because the salary is even higher than that of herself, Mrs. Lee finally decided to quit her job and become a stay-at-home mom. So far, Mrs. Lee has been home looking after her child for nearly 10 months.
Hard to balance their Careers and Motherly Roles
Mrs. Lee doesn\'t regret for her decision of quitting her job. She calculated her family budget this way: hiring a babysitter costs about 2,300 RMB yuan a month, besides the meals costs. The babysitter doesn\'t cook, so she needs to cook by herself after a long-day work. In that way, she will be very tired and, her salary, which is about 2,000 RMB yuan, will be not enough to pay the babysitter. In addition, she is satisfied to stay with her child at home and enjoy watching her child growing day by day.
Mrs. Lee is not the only mom who quit her job for children. After the implementation of the "second child" policy, Mrs. Li, who plans to have a second child this year, is also considering quitting her job to raise children by herself. She told the reporter that the high salary of the babysitter is not the main reason for her quitting. The real reason that prompted her to quit is that her first son was brought up and spoiled so much by her parents that she decided to raise her second child by herself. The new family planning policy allows me to have a second child, and my family financial condition can ensure me a good life even if I don’t work, so I won’t hesitate to quit and take care of my children.
The reporter interviewed 10 young women, six of whom said that the salary of the babysitter has risen higher than their own salaries, so they will quit their jobs after they give birth to their children and looked after them by themselves. However, four of them said that quitting job for children was not an ideal choice. They are afraid that if they leave work for too long, it will be more difficult for them to find a job again.
What Is More Important?
Having given birth to a child, how should young mothers choose between their careers and families? The reporter consulted Yang Zihong, a national Secondary-level Psychological Counselor, for suggestions. According to Ms. Yang, it is certain that the best choice is to find the balance between work and the family. But if you cannot find a balance, then you must have a preference in your mind, and that must be what you really want. If young mothers choose to give up their jobs for family, they can avoid isolation from the society by enriching themselves through online learning, etc.. While enjoying the pleasure of watching their children growing, they can also lay a good foundation for their future job. (Reporters: Zheng Lan, and Wang Xiaoyan)
