In May, the CPI of the urban area of Yichang increased 2.3% from the same month a year earlier and 0.4 % higher than last month. Compared with April, the amount of increase climbed 1.1 % year on year and 0.8% month on month, according to the Yichang Investigation Team of National Bureau of Statistics. Accelerated increases in the prices of clothing, food and housing were the main contributor to the higher CPI figure.
For the appropriate temperature and abundant rainfall of May, some local vegetables such as green beans, eggplant, tomatoes grew quickly so that the market supply was reinforced. The prices of urban vegetable, fresh vegetable, potato respectively fell 10.6%, 10.9% and 17.3% year on year, while declining 4.7%, 4.9% and 8.2% month on month. On the contrary, as temperature rose and people had a bigger demand for fresh fruits, fresh fruit prices grew by 10.1% month on month, and the prices of apples, bananas, watermelon, citrus were all up.
Influenced by the fluctuation of the pork price, purchasing and storage policy of pork, holidays and other factors, pork prices finally began to recover in May with an increase of 7.2% month on month. But when compared with the same month of last year, the price is still low with a decline of 2.9% year on year.
Prices of the cooked food outside was also up by 3.7% with the influence of food, labor and other costs.
As summer comes, the electric fan consumption increased. The prices of fans and its processing and maintenance services respectively rose 7.5% and 11.8% month on month.
