According to Beijing Industrial and Commercial Bureau, the fast fashion brands, such as MUJI, H&M, VEROMODA and ZARA, have quality problems: the fiber content, color fastness and PH value of their clothing didn\'t meet relevant standards. It is noteworthy that this is not the first time for those brands to appear in the blacklist. In recent years, with the expansion of “fast fashion” brands, the “unqualified” problem is always there. However, after those problems were exposed, products were pulled from shelves and penalty was implemented but the improvement of those products was not seen. Experts suggested that a blacklist system should be set up so as to make the dishonest enterprises to pay a higher price for their dishonesty.
“Fast Fashion” quality problem exposed
In Xidan and Wangfujing shopping malls at Beijing, there are few customers at the shops, but ZARA, H&M, VEROMODA and some other similar shops are crowded. Those brands due to its fast update of design are popular among young people and they are called “fast fashion”.
Liu Yang is a college sophomore. She is picking a T-shirt with unique pattern and she said that the clothing of those brands did have some quality problems, such as thrum, loose sequins, color fading and pilling. Generally speaking, the cloth can be worn only for one year. However, it is cheap and fashionable, and that’s what we want.
Last year, China Consumer Association (CCA) released the comparative experimental result about 70 “fast fashion” clothes, and only 64% are qualified. Three kinds of biggest problems are dishonest fiber content, excessively high formaldehyde content, PH value and color fastness don’t meet the standards.
According to CCA, formaldehyde content and PH value have something to do with our health. Excessively high PH value could damage the nature shield of our skin, cause burns and bacteria which may lead to diseases; if color fastness fails, it will affect the textile’s quality and normal usage: when it is washed with other clothes, its fading color will stain them and causes unnecessary losses for customers.
“Fast and cheap” leads to slack supervision of quality
There are two production models of those “fast fashion” brands: one is that factory is responsible for design, manufacturing and developing new materials, and brand owners purchase from the factory; the other one is that brand owners sign a manufacturing contrast with the factory who will decide the material’s purchasing and production.
Qiu Baochang, the team leader of CCA legal team, said: “Their time is ticking. It only takes half a month from design to market in a fast way or 1-2 months in a slow way. Taking cost into consideration, good shell fabric won\'t be chosen which would lead to the shell fabric problem for certain production.” He also said that, without scientific and reasonable quality supervision, the quality control of enterprises didn’t do a good job.
Due to low price demands, “fast fashion” brands processing is faced with great cost pressure. An insider told our reporter that “fast fashion” brands negotiate with the processing factory fiercely, while the labor cost is high. The quality problems of “fast fashion” appear often, and most of them are the problems of shell fabric.
“Customer should not depend on foreign brands too much, as it may also have lots of problems. Do some comparison before purchase.” said Qiu Baochang. In recent years, some foreign brands are exposed for quality problems. Take cloth as an example, some foreign brands delegate domestic factory to produce. According to their contrast, the number of certain batch production should be 5000, but in reality, 5500 are produced, which means the 500 more should not be exported and labeled. However the factory will sell the rest 500 productions in the name of domestic exports, thus some illegal businessmen simulate or produce worse productions in the name of foreign brands. Those clothes often have quality problems.
