Fragrant flowers replaced the harsh firecrackers. Tree planting in memory of the dead took the place of burning paper money. During this three-day-long Tomb-Sweeping Festival, the low-carbon way of tomb-sweeping has become a new choice for the citizens to worship their ancestors, which also makes the Tomb-sweeping journey more civilized than ever.

　　 Although this Tomb-sweeping Festival was full of rain, it didn’t prevent people from paying homage to the martyrs. On April 4, more than 30 anti-war veterans and volunteers from Wuhan, Jingzhou and Xiantao who care for anti-war veterans paid a visit to many ruins of the Battle in West Hubei in Qiaobian Town, Dianjun District. They went there not only to pay their homage to the martyrs of the war but also to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of Anti-Japanese War.

     On the morning of April 5, the sound of suona could be heard in front of the Cultural Tourism Area in the Hometown of Qu Yuan(BC339-278), a great statesman and poet in the Warring States Period. About ten thousand visitors walked into the scenic area. They bowed deeply to Qu Yuan’s bronze statue to express their reminiscence and admiration. In the Qu Yuan Temple, many teenage students visited orderly under the guidance of their teachers.

     According to the staff in Yichang Martyrs’ Cemetery, with the approaching of Qingming Festival, some schools, government agencies and People’s Liberation Army garrison in Yichang came to Yichang Martyrs’ Cemetery to sweep tombs and cherish the memory of revolutionary martyrs. From April 1 to 5, a peak of tomb-sweeping was formed and the number of people that swept tombs reached 15,000. 

     Apart from tomb-sweeping, some citizens planted trees to pay great respects to the memory of their ancestors. At the same time, they could also make the nature more colorful.

     A drizzling rain fell like tears on the Mourning Day; visitors were fascinated by the overflowing beauty of spring. During the Festival, traditional tomb-sweeping, the appreciation of flowers in a spring outing in suburbs and a short-route of parent-child trip became themes of the festival, and the tourist season began with these themes. Tourists were attracted to go for a walk in the country in spring and enjoy beautiful flowers by means of the experience-type of leisure and sightseeing on the 14th Session of Peach Blossom Art Festival hosted by Anfushi Town, Zhijiang City. Rare camellia varieties were introduced at the 7th Session of World Famous Flowers Exhibition held by Qiaobian Town, Dianjun District. During the Exhibition, different kinds of flowers were blooming. If tourists participated in the activity of readily photos-taking called “peach blossom smiles” in Xiling Gorge Scenic Spot and they uploaded these photos to their microblog and wechat, they would have the chance to win some prizes. On April 6, an activity named “My Guide Is the Star: Singaporeans Travelling to Hubei” was held in Three Gorges Waterfall Tourism Area, which attracted many travel enthusiasts to take part in.

     Since 2014, an activity called “Falling in Love with Yichang and Taking Civilized Trips” has been launched jointly by Cultural and Ideological Progress Promotion Committee Office of Yichang City as well as Yichang Tourism Administration. Since then, cultural tourism has become a new trend of Yichang’s tourism industry.

     During this year’s Qingming Festival, cultural tourism brochures were displayed at the entrances of many major tourist attractions and the tourist service center. Some warm slogans such as “Take Happy and Civilized Trips” were set up in a prominent position. Many scenic spots also launched an activity to look for the “cultural tourists”. For example, Xiling Gorge Scenic Spot took “Environmental Protection of Tourism and Drawing Red Envelops” as the theme of the activity. Many visitors were also invited to receive free trash bags when they entered the scenic spot. They could draw red envelops for free to win cash awards with the recycling of garbage. Many major tourist attractions also organized cultural tourism volunteer service. Cultural tourism has become beautiful scenery.

     During the vacation, Yichang’s tourism security was good in general and the tourism market was in order. There weren’t major tourist complaints or travel accidents. According to statistics, during the festival the city received a total of 1,127,600 tourists both at home and abroad. The tourism revenue reached RMB 562 million Yuan ($90.5382 million dollars). (Reporters: Wang Ying, Xiao Min; Correspondents: Li Mei, Yang Min)
