Yichang: Waste-Sorting Model City

  According to Yichang’s pilot work conference on waste-sorting on May 28th, 5 ministries including the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the National development and Reform Commission awarded the first 26 domestic waste-sorting pilot cities. Yichang is the only modal city in Hubei Province.
  In 2013, Yichang launched waste-sorting pilot in 32 regions including governments, schools, community properties, farmers’ markets and rural areas. At the technical level, it defined the process of "sorting, recycling, reduction first and then bury harmlessly and biochemical treat to landfill." It also proposed a method of "selling the valuable ones, separate hazardous with others, separate wet and dry from garbage". Districts in the pilot process suit measures to local conditions and created a variety of waste–sorting ways. The district of Wujiagang, Yiling and Yichang high-tech zone, were respectively equipped with wet garbage trucks. Pilot units preliminary Pided garbage into two categories i.e. dry and wet garbage as well as taking resource recovery into consideration.
  This year, the pilot units will achieve maximum improvement in kitchen waste source reduction, garbage recycling, specify in every pilot units and support private waste collection sites. Mountain farmers will implement organic waste composting, pile up other classification of waste and collect monthly or quarterly. Farmers \' market will try to organic waste composting and encourage qualified residential areas to put kitchen waste as environmental garbage enzyme.
  According to recommended classification models and methods, Yichang actively encourages enterprises to enter into the community and engage in waste disposal and comprehensive utilization of units, as well as establishing classes of solid waste reduction incentives. It will also strictly implement the classification leader’s responsibility system to strengthen supervision and examination. To the end of this year, Yichang’s garbage collection coverage will reach 30%, the per capita garbage transport volume will down 2%, and solid waste resource utilization rate will reach to 20%. By 2020, urban garbage each cell and demonstration unit’s collection coverage will reach to 90%, per capita garbage transport volume will down 6 %, and solid waste resource utilization rate will reach to 60%.
