(Xinhua News Agency June 1st) A passenger cruise named Dongfangzhixing (Eastern Star) from Nanjing to Chongqing with 458 people sank Monday night at around 9:30 p.m. at the Jianli (Hubei Province) section of the Yangtze River, according to the Yangtze River Navigation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a work team of the State Council to rush to the site to guide search and rescue work, and ordered Hubei, Chongqing and relevant parties to carry out all-out search and rescue efforts and properly handle the aftermath. He also ordered beefing up public safety measures and ensuring the safety of people\'s lives.

A huge search and rescue operation is now underway on a section of the Yangtze River in China, after a passenger ship sank late on Monday night with 458 people on board. More than 3,000 rescuers are now in Hubei Province, trying to reach trapped survivors still inside the boat.

The ship is upside down in 15 meters of water with a part of its hull visible. Frogmen from fire brigade and forces have already started underwater search and rescue, according to the reporter.
So far, 19 people have been rescued from the water, including 14 survivals, according to Yang Chuantang, the minister of the Ministry of Transport .
There were altogether 456 people on board, including 405 passengers, 5 travel agency workers and 46 crew members. All the passengers on board came from 7 provinces and cities, 97 were from Shanghai, 204 from Jiangsu, 11 from Zhejiang, 43 from Tianjin, 19 from Fujian, 8 from Anhui and 23 from Shandong.
At present, the rescue is continuing.
