28 Enterprises Achieve 1st Carbon Emission Reduction Target
2015-08-14 11:32:50

28 enterprises of Yichang City successfully achieve the target of carbon dioxide emission reduction for the first time, according to the Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.

In order to respond positively to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emission, the pilot carbon emission trading is carried out in seven provinces and cities in China. Hubei Province is one of the first pilot provinces with a total number of 138 enterprises and public institutions which are the first batch under the management of provincial carbon emissions quotas. 28 enterprises are in Yichang, mainly specialized in chemical, building materials, thermal and other fields, accounting for 20.3% of the province.

After verification, the actual emission of these 28 enterprises in Yichang city in 2014 was less than the approved carbon emission quotas of Hubei province, which means 18 enterprises have the surplus emission quota, 10 in deficiency. In accordance with the relevant provisions, the surplus quota can be sold by carbon trading platform. The deficient enterprises must purchase their quota by carbon trading platform in Hubei Province to pay back the equivalent quota of last year to the department which is in charge of carbon emission. These enterprises do these in order to acheive their target of carbon emission reduction. Yichang city attaches great importance to this work and carries it out strictly in accordance with the requirements and within the prescribed time.

According to the unified deployment, from 2016, China will gradually establish a unified national carbon emissions trading market, and the enterprises and public institutions with an annual energy consumption of more than 5,000 tons of standard coal will be included in the emissions quota management.
