The BRT of Yichang was officially opened to the market on July 15, 2015, marking the beginning of green travel in Yichang. For the six months in the past, with 1 main line and 22 branches, the sharing rate of BRT bus sharing rate increased to 29.1 % from the rate less than 25% in 2013. Choosing BRT as travel means normally saves more than 10 minutes for citizens.
Wang Li, the operation department director of the Bus Group Company in Yichang, said that in the testing operation day on July 15 last year the passenger flow volume reached 7 million times in the 22 BRT lines. And less than half year, the data reached 9 million times per day and the passengers’ satisfaction also increased from 50% at the beginning to 85% at present. More than 10 cities, which have not opened the BRT bus system by the transportation department, such as Wuhan, Hefei, Dandong, Yiwu and so on, sent their delegations to Yichang to learn and study the BRT development.
Wang Li expressed that the change is the result of continuous improvement in the aspects of the BRT guide, operation and transfer made by the Bus Group Company. She also said that fast speed and convenience is the first benefit brought by BRT to the residents along lines. Since the opening of the BRT, the operating speed of the bus in the BRT corridor is 23 kilometers per hour and when it compared with the speed of 12.5 kilometers per hour of the normal bus along the Dongshan road before the marketing of BRT, its speed increased by 50%. The BRT bus station board signs are gradually set up in place within one operation month. In addition, passengers also helped to better improve the system and the bus environment becomes more and more comfortable. At the beginning of the last October, 20 super-sized buses, 18 meters of length and which can transport 100 people once time are placed in the main line of B9, making the BTR capacity added and its efficiency significantly improved. Apart from this, the planning operation time of B9 is highly consistent with its practical time, so with punctuality rate of 99% B9 won the trust of the people. The citizens can carry out infinite transfer in the same direction within the BRT corridor, making the maximum convenience of the BRT system featuring “one starting point and N terminus”. The citizen at the station can transfer from the BRT main line to other 22 bus lines after 22 stations, which not only expand the radiation area of BRT, but also attract more citizens to the BRT lines, making more people to share the convenience of BRT transportation. Wang Li said that when people enjoy the convenience of traveling by BRT, their traveling ways also changes silently. According to the statistics from the American ITDP, the free transfer rate of Yichang BRT is 32 %, which is always among the top ones of all the cites having BRT system in the country.
