The world largest ship lift Three Gorges(the ship lift)has completed the test of passing through the Three Gorges Dam this week, which laid the foundation for its trial operation this year. On the occasion, the time spent in ships’ passing the dam will be shortened from 3-plus-hour to about 40 minutes, thus increasing the annual navigation capacity by 6 million tons.
The ship lift marked the end of the Three Gorges Project which began in April, 2009 and lasted for more than 6 years, and finally succeeded in its ship trial. According to the staff from China Three Gorges Corporation, the ship lift gained initial success by meeting the technical requirements and conditions, and is expected to be put into trial operation within the year; moreover, joint trial, full-scale ship test and trial navigation will be carried through in follow-up work.
With the entire length of the ship lift being about 5,000m and its dam-crossing capacity of 3,000 ton, some data about it are as follow: the building height of its compartments pillar 146m, its largest lifting height 113m, its largest lifting weight over 15,500 ton, and its ship-chamber 132 m-long, 23.4 m-wide and 10 m-high. All of these data demonstrate that the ship lift is the most technically challenging ship-lifting project with the world largest scale.
The throughput of two-way ship-lock is designed to be 100-million-ton. The waiting time for lockage of average ships is nearly 40 hours, that of ships carrying dangerous goods being over 50 hours, and of descending boat being 340 hours maximally. Due to the long waiting hours for cruise ships, it is common that passengers need to be transferred in Yichang. The conflict between the trafficability failure of Three Gorges Project and the increasing amount of the upstream-downstream transportation of the Yangtze River continues to mount.
The ship form of the ship lift was designed to bear 3,000-ton large passenger vessels, cruise ships and some cargo ships carrying fresh supplies. According to the staff of China Three Gorges Corporation, the service of the ship lift will cut the time of passing permanent ship-lock from 3.5-hour to about 40 minutes. At that time, visitors are expected to be no longer troubled by transferring. It is estimated that the Three Gorges Dam will correspondingly increase its dam-crossing capacity of 6 million ton annually, which gives full play to the navigation benefits of the Yangtze River golden waterway and economic results in society.(Reporter Wang Ying and Zhao Guoqiang)
