At the invitation of ITDP of USA to attend the World Sustainable Transport Award Ceremony, Mao Chuanqiang, the vice mayor, member of the Standing Committee of Yichang Municipal Committee, led the delegation of Yichang to observe the Public Bicycle System operating details in Washington on January the 13th.
Washington is the first city in America to construct public bicycle system in 2008. At present, there are 350 public bicycle sites, over 3000 public bicycles and 130-kilometer bicycle lanes. The local people and tourists can enjoy a bike ride within 30 minutes each time after buying tickets by credit card at the rental sites with no frequency limit and there will be extra fee for use over 30 minutes.
Mao Chuanqiang says, the construction of public bicycle system is significant for the sustainable development of Yichang urban transportation. Yichang will actively draw on the ripe experience of Washington public bicycle system and enhance the bilateral exchanges and cooperation so as to rapidly advance the construction of Yichang’s public bicycle system, to constantly optimize and improve its traffic management system so that green and low carbon travel can become a fashion here.
At present, the first phase 27 public bicycle service sites in the downtown Yichang are under rapid construction. And there will be 2000 urban public bicycles in the next 2 years. (Correspondent: Zhang Zihuan)
