According to the Road Transport Bureau, the construction permit appraisal of Three Gorges Dam Jiangbei Highway has been passed successfully, so this highway is expected to begin construction this year.

In accordance with the recommended scheme, the Three Gorges Dam Jiangbei Highway has a total length of 31.7 km, starting at the new port in Taiping River, then connecting with the port roads and going eastward along the Fuchengping Valley. The Zhaizibao Tunnel is built to go through the ridge of a mountain, and the highway continues going eastward along the mountainside to Shaping. Then, it turns to south along the mountainside in the west side of the Letian River. In the south of Shaping Second Power Station, the Letian River Bridge is built. After passing the Letian River, the highway goes eastward along a valley and then along the mountainside to arrive at the Dengzi River. The Dengzi River Tunnel and Tudibao Tunnel is built to cross the Daling Hillside and Dashan Peak, and then the highway reaches the Niuxikou. After that, it goes northward along a valley. Along the northern direction of Tangjia Dam, the highway goes nearly 3.5 km and then turns towards the northeast. The Hengxi Tunnel is built to cross the ridge of a mountain.  The highway extends eastward along the mountainside and a valley to cross the Xiaofeng River. It turns towards the northeast in Luojia Dam. The Luojia Dam Tunnel and the Zhaijiagou Tunnel are built to cross the ridge of a mountain, and a southern hub is built to connect with the Yiba Highway.

The highway has four lanes and is bidirectional with the designed speed of 80 km/h. The highway construction project has a total investment of 3.97 bln Yuan, which is an important project in the Hubei “Nine Vertical Highways, Five Horizontal Highways and Three Loop Lines” Highway-network-constructing Plan. The construction project of Three Gorges Dam Jiangbei Highway can effectively enhance the comprehensive capacity of Three Gorges transportation hubs, make the phosphorite outbound passageway for the places like Yiling, Xingshan and Yuanan more convenient, and save the transportation costs as well. Meanwhile, it can also promote the construction of E’xi ecological and cultural tourism circle, connect the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, Three Gorges Dam Area and Shennonjia Scenic spot, and create continuous brand effects for Hubei’s tourism industry.
