On Feb 16th, Chen Huiyuan, a man from Yangjiatang Village of Renheping Town, Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County, was bustling at the quarry. He is one of the few ancestry craftsman skilled at building rockroof houses, and has now become the main force in the protection of the characteristics of the village. He said “I’ve been cutting the stone plates in preparation for the restoration work of the old rock houses in the coming spring.” 

The roofs of the rockroof houses look like fish scales, which are made of the unique local thin stone plates. “The rise of the rural tourism has made us aware of the potential value of the rockroof houses.” said Liu Zhiyong, Party secretary of Yangjiatang Village. The rockroof houses have become one of the key projects after the village is entitled as the pilot village of the county in the construction of villages with characteristics. The concentration area of the old rockroof houses has been designated as conservation zone, in which the residents are encouraged to repair and protect the houses by the incentive measures of the local government. According to the plan, Yangjiatang Village will develop and integrate rockroof houses, chestnuts, firewood rice, Tiankeng (naturally formed pits) and carves to create a leisure tourism attraction by which the villagers can increase their incomes.

At present, such traditional residential houses of Tujia Nationality as rockroof houses and stilted buildings in Wufeng County have been under protection and repair work in succession. “To develop tourism with unique features by way of protection” is the guidline. Liu Zhenghong, director of Wufeng Tourism Bureau, said that nowadays the benefits of eco-cultural tourism have been increasing in Wufeng. Especially building villages with unique features has become an important means of the local residents to alleviate poverty. According to the statistics, during the \'12th Five-Year\' Plan period (2011-2015), a number of towns and villages with special characteristics in the county like Changleping Town, Liziping Village, Baiyanping Village, Dalishu Village have won such honorary titles as National Tourism Village with Featured Scene, Chinese Model Village of Rural Tourism, one of Ten Most Beautiful Village in Jinchu, Famous Tourism Village in Hubei Province. So far, the county has been visited by 7.81 million tourists creating total tourism revenue of 4.2 billion yuan.

In 2016, Wufeng will center on the aim of building a "national and regional tourism model county, anti-poverty tourism demonstrative county, national ecological resort” to create a panoramic Wufeng with blue sky, flowing water, colorful road, green mountains and rich culture. The county will focus on the construction of Yuyangguan as an eco-tourism town, Wufeng Town as an “international slow-paced city”, Chaibuxi Resort, Houhe Resort and the “two districts and two towns connected by one belt” scenic project, with the belt being the state highway No. 351. It will deepen the strategic cooperation with Xingfa Group to speed up the tourism resources development of its western tourism resources in Houhe, Baiyizhai, Bailushilin and other places, and support each town to build more than one AAA scenic spot and one demonstrative anti-poverty tourism village. The county will also start the construction of four demonstrative villages in the protection of their unique features and strive to promote the specialty foods and folk culture of Tujia Nationality by such activities as Tujia Valentine\'s Day and Tujia Cultural Festival, Tents’ Day, Orange Festival, Plum Festival, Tea-picking Festival, Tea Tasting Festival, making efforts to attract 2.3 million tourists and realize a total income of 1.57 billion yuan.
