Chinese President Mao Zedong once wrote in a poem like this:

“Violet, blue, orange, yellow, indigo, red and green 

Who dances with the color ribbon in the sky serene?”   

If applied in Yichang, the dancer will be the glamorous spring and smiling clean water.

On Feb. 19th, the reporter took a taste of its unique charm of the big city construction for people’s livelihood after walking in the Canal Park and enjoying beautiful scenery as well as smile on people’s faces.

Dead Corner Turned into Scenery Corridor

Along the colorful corridor in Canal Park, flowing clean water is on one side, and lively flowers, grass and trees are on the other side. There are many passers-by on street with some cyclists riding fast sometimes. Although it is still early spring now, the air from the river and plants smells fresh and refreshing. 

“Canal Park is environmentally beneficial to tens of thousands of residents nearby.” Xian Hongqing who lives in Nanhai Garden said, pointing to tall buildings under the mountain. There was no square for leisure activities nearby, but now residents can go to Canal Park for exercises.

Mr. Gao and his family, who live in Minshengshijia, walked along the canal. Before going to Nanjing for college study, his daughter insisted on coming here to have a look with her mind full of new corridor scenery rather than messy environment in the past. “Yichang is left with beautiful scenery, so wherever we go, we can proudly admit we are from Yichang!” In fact, students all miss beauty of the hometown. 

Wu Gang, director of the Municipal Construction Committee, said that it was written in the municipal government work report in 2012 that the canal needed to be rectified. Over four years of special concentrated renovation on environmental health, illegal building and illegal cultivation, the messy scenery along the 14-kilometer canal has changed greatly. The goal of “clean river, green trees on the bank, beautiful scenery” has been preliminarily achieved. Previous “dead corner” has become a longing “scenery corridor” now.

Building a Model Project for People’s Livelihood and Happiness 

In the round square of Canal Park, it is rather jolly with 10 senior people doing fitness exercises, some beating drum while dancing, some doing yangko dance, and some playing Tai Chi at ease.

Some senior people recognized Dai Darong, director of management center of Urban Construction Project in the Municipal Construction Committee, who walked with us, and they came here to say hi to us, some giving thumb to park construction, some expressing their wish and giving advice in terms of future construction and management of park. Dai Darong gave feedback and explanation to them one by one. “The number of members in our fitness team doubly increases after the expansion of the site.” Wei Muhai, the coach of Blue Sky Fitness Team of Tai Chi, said. In last Oct., he gave advice to Dai Darong on construction spot in the hope of rebuilding the wasteland which was designed to serve as grassland as a square. This piece of advice was adopted, and the construction has already begun before Spring Festival. “Canal Park is beautiful now, attracting all kinds of fitness teams, so the small square designed before is not enough to hold these people!” Dang Ji who is responsible for Canal Park project of municipal construction committee on spot said. Construction unit and construction party will try to accept advice from citizens if the condition is allowed after they do research repeatedly.

In order to expand fitness sites for citizens, the government expanded 80 mu to build Green Valley Square along the canal in Zhangjiawan eight group, High-Tech Zone in Yichang last year. At present, the square is in embryo, and it will hold hundreds of people for fitness, as the biggest activity center for citizens in Canal Park. 

“The only standard of judging the work is whether citizens are satisfied.” Dai Darong said. During the construction of Canal Park, the municipal construction committee has worked hard for people’s livelihood and happiness, and totally adopts over 40 pieces of advice from citizens, involving over 3000 citizens.

“If we are asked to mark, it must be full mark!” what the reporter saw and heard along the road was all the compliments about Canal Park from citizens.

Bridge Connecting People’s Hearts

Canal Park extends to upper part of Dongshan Tunnel where there are more people. Here stands an orange steel ladder, called “bridge for people’s convenience”, connecting rows of tall buildings and the enchanting park. Jie Xingfu, deputy secretary of party branch in Shenzhen Avenue society, said that it was not only a bridge bringing convenience for citizens, but also a bridge connecting the hearts between the government and citizens.

There are three residential quarters along the canal: Huateng Quarter, Dongyuan Apartment and Yongyao Quarter, holding over 1000 households in total. Before the rectification of canal, citizens did not even want to open windows and balconies facing the canal due to messy environment. However, as the rectification project progresses, the park is more and more charming. In this way, citizens not only open windows to admire beautiful scenery, but also want to go for exercises in the park, but the problem is that it will take over 20 minutes for them to go there. “Beautiful scenery is in front of our eyes, but not reachable at hand.” In last July, over 1000 citizens jointly wrote letters to the municipal construction committee, persuading to make the road between the park and the quarter unobstructed. The municipal Constitution committee sent experts to do research on spot. However, the scheme has been revised 5 times due to steep slopes and narrow roads. The construction began officially in Oct. and was completed in the end of Dec. Nowadays, citizens in this quarter can go directly to the park. “As the bridge is completed, we feel extremely happy!” Mao Daqing in Yongyao Quarter said happily. “Citizens should enjoy it once the park is built.” Dai Darong said. There are 8 passageways beneficial to citizens like this in the 2.2-kilometer crowded area from Broadcasting and Television Center to the power station. After the completion of Canal Park, it can benefit hundreds of thousands of citizens, as a real “backyard garden” for citizens in Yichang development zone.
