Wacang Village is a red land where the first shot was fired in the Erxi Autumn Harvest Uprising, and where the first revolutionary government of workers and peasants was founded in western Hubei Province, which was ruled by the people themselves, and gave birth to the first full-time armed force of workers and peasants there —— Erxi Advance Brigade. Nowadays, the villagers, bathing in the past glory, are launching a tough compaign of the targeted poverty alleviation.

 

　　To develop industry is fundamental to poverty alleviation. According to the introduction of Xiong Wensheng, the party branch secretary of Wacang Village, in recent years, the village has built more than 100 standardized mushroom greenhouses in Hengdianji Town and created a standardized demonstration base for mushroom planting so that the total quantity of edible mushrooms cultivated in plastic bags by the whole village has exceeded 3.5million, which can generate an annual profit of 10 million yuan. Meanwhile, the village focuses on building the brand of "Wacang Village" by completing a 2500-acre high-quality rice planting base, by improving the quality of rice and by establishing Wacang Rice Professional Cooperatives while taking measures to boost its publicity and widen its marketing channels, so as to ensure the grain yield and income of the farmers.

 

　　In poverty alleviation, bellwethers of the trade play an important role. 10 kilometers away from the house of Zheng Anmin lay Hong Lin Family Farm in Yuan'an County, which was in a hive of activity at this time, with its leader Wang Honglin togather with other workers busy sawing wood and bagging the sawdust. Mr. Wang is among the first batch of mushroom growers and has become an expert of the industry owing to his inquiring mind and willingness to take adventures. In 2007, he took up the production, processing, and marketing of glutinous feed, whose good quality wins the trust of mushroom growers, and thus it is sold to Hunan, Sichuan, Henan and other provinces. Wang Honglin does not forget his fellow villagers and has been teaching them planting skills for free. And so far, he has helped 23 poor villagers to take up an occupation or plant mushrooms so that they can become rich. “The cadres and the villagers in Wacang Village are united together and are confident to win the battle against poverty. Hopefully, the rice will be more fragrant, the mushrooms will be more pleasing and the villagers will have a better life in Wacang Village next year." Xiong Wensheng said with great confidence.
