216 General Practitioners build the Grassroots-level Medical and Health Care Institutions
2016-11-07 09:40:29
“Doctor Fang is a general practitioner who can not only treat some minor illnesses such as fever and headache but also some emergent cases such as acute myocardial infarction or cerebral infarction”. Recently, Xu Xiaoning, living in Zhangjiadian Community, Wanshouqiao Street of Wujiagang District, highly praised his family doctor Fang Liang in an interview.
Fang Liang is the first general practitioner in the Wanshouqiao Community Health Service Center. Currently, eight personnel in the Center have obtained the qualifications as general practitioners.
General medical practitioners act as “health guards” in the basic medical care system of our country.  Over the past years, 216 general family doctors have been trained in Yichang via general medicine training program, general medicine elite training program, and job-transfer training in general medicine, professional post examination and others”. According to the relevant person working in the Yichang Health and Family Planning Commission, from 2016 to 2018, the Yichang City will cultivate and introduce 100 general family doctors to meet the needs of urban residents for basic medical care and health services.
The team of general family doctors in the Yichang City has been basically formed. Who will be responsible for the residents living in rural areas of Yichang?
On the morning of Oct. 26, 21-year-old Xiao Mufan, wearing a white uniform, was in ward visit with the principal physician in the in-patient department of Neurology of the Yiling Hospital. Although he is still an intern, he is able to treat new patients, writing medical records and providing doctor’s advice for patients.
Xiao Mufan is not an ordinary intern, but one of the first-batch college students who work as village doctors after being trained through commissioned cultivation program in Yichang.
Having graduated from senior high school three years ago, Xiao Mufan signed a contract with the Health and Family Planning Bureau of the Yiling District and became one of the first-batch village doctors who have been trained through the commissioned cultivation program in the college, and then he was sent to Xiangyang Polytechnic to further his study. This June, Xiao Mufan practiced in the Yiling Hospital, and he will become a full-time doctor after graduation from college next year.
In order to enhance the quality and ability of rural doctors, the “customized training” program, aiming at training village doctors in the college, has been launched since 2014 in Yichang. Currently, 537 people have been recruited in three batches. The first batch graduates, 108 in total, will go to different rural areas and act as “health guards” of villagers after graduation next year. “In order to help them settle down in the countryside, those village doctors with college-degrees will be officially recognized as medical professionals and thus be entitled to corresponding social benefits.” The director of relevant department in Yichang Health and Family Planning Commission told reporters that the Yichang City will step up the efforts to cultivate general practitioners through various means to effectively alleviate the shortage of doctors in grassroots-level medical and health institutions.
