Changyang: Bengjianzi Awarded National Nature Reserve

  Bengjianzi natural reserve was on the list of the “General Office of the State Council on the Publication of Panzhong, Heilongjiang and Other 16 New State-level Nature Reserve List Notice” issued by the State Council Office of the State Council(2017) 64 in July 6th.

  Bengjianzi natural reserve is located in south-central of Changyang county. With the highest elevation of 2,259 meters, it is at the northeast rim of Wuling Mountain, also middle and lower reaches of Qingjiang River. The total area of the protection zone is 13,313 hectares, including 4,602 hectares of the core area, 3,883 hectares of the buffer zone and 4,828 hectares of the experimental area. The main protected creatures are the central subtropical forest ecosystem, rare and endangered wild animals and plants such as dove tree, forest musk deer and leopard, along with special herbs germplasm resources like angelica tuhuo. It belongs to the forest ecosystem nature reserve.

  According to scientific investigation, there are 185 families, including 791 genus and 1955 species vascular plants in this protection zone, which has 21 species (the first level: 5 species; the second level: 16 species) of national key protected wild plants, such as Davidia involucrate, Taxus chinensis. And 27 species of national rare and endangered plants are there. Vertebrates are 106 families including 286 genus and 397 species, of which the national key protected wild animals are 54 species, such as forest musk deer, golden eagle, giant salamander (the first level: 5, the second level 49). There are 51 species of rare and endangered animals in China and 41 species of unique animals in China. In addition, there are 98 kinds of key protected animals in Hubei province and 284 animals that are protected in China, beneficial or good for important economic and scientific research. It is especially noteworthy that Changyang is the type locality of Chinese salamanders, which has important value of protection and scientific research.

  The region is seen by academics as an important component of "25 global biodiversity areas and hotspots - the central and southern regions of China". In 2010, the “China Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan” ranked it as a key area for priority conservation of biodiversity in China. (Correspondents: Shang Hongxi, Yu Faxun)
