The Golden Lake used to be the biggest lake in Yichang, and an age-old fishing ground. However, the lake smelt awful, with mosquitoes flying above the water surface. Since the Golden Lake is connected with the Yangtze River, the filthy water also polluted the Yangtze River. Under such circumstances, the government of the Zhijiang City decided to take effective measures to manage it. Early last year, the government invested 18.5 million yuan to buy out the fishery contract, so as to move out the lakeside livestock and poultry breeding base, and to prohibit artificial fish feeding. After hard work, the filthy fishing ground has been turned into beautiful lake. Subsequently, in order to protect the Yangtze River, the government also invested a large sum of money to purify the water. About 3.9 square kilometers of farmland are relocated and 271 villagers are moved out, which helps to turn the dirty and messy village into the national ecological wetland park.
