With fifteen subjects taken into account and comprehensive development assessment playing a key role, the presentation of the senior school entrance exam will be improved into a new model. On Dec. 29th, news from Hubei Ministry of Education that the reform for senior school entrance exam will be carried out in Yichang for the first-year junior high school students who were enrolled in school in 2017.
Beginning from September, 2018, all the first-year junior high school students in Hubei will be involved in the senior high school entrance exam reform apart from the enrollment mechanism reform. From September of 2020, all the first-year junior high school students will be involved in the senior high school exam reform in all sectors.
After the reform, senior high schools in our province will enroll students according to those two criteria: the scores of senior high school exam and the comprehensive development assessment.
In the near future, we will combine the junior high school graduation examine and senior high school entrance examine into one, which thus will play multiple roles for the examinees. The scores of the academic proficiency tests will include scoring subjects and grading subjects, among which scoring subjects include ethics and laws, history, Chinese, math, English, PE, physics, chemistry and some experiment operations. All these will be recorded by its original scores on the paper; subjects like music, art, integrative practical activities (information technology education), life security education, and mental health education will be recorded by grade. Subjects like biology and geology will either be scored or graded. This will be decided by the municipal ministry of education. For students who prefer to be admitted by senior high schools, they will be restricted to have at most one failed subject among the graded subjects.
This reform makes it clear that the enrollment of senior high school students in pilot areas must take comprehensive quality assessment into account. Meanwhile, comprehensive development assessment must take a key part in the admission of senior high school, thus breaking up the convention which matters nothing but scores. The assessment will include the student’s personality, academic performance, mental and physical health, artistic accomplishment and social practice. In principle, the comprehensive quality evaluation result is one of the bases for the admission of high school students in grade presentation, more effective ways can also be explored based on grade and graded score.(Reporter: Cao Yu)
