Reporters learned on June 18 that since this year, Yichang Customs has made every effort to crack down on the smuggling of endangered species, especially in Southeast Asia, increasing targeted inspection of endangered species products. Up to now, Yichang Customs has continuously seized 14 products of endangered species, a total of 784 grams, illegally carried by passengers through entry channels.
China is a party to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). According to the regulations, it is illegal to import and export endangered wild animals and plants and their products by any means of trade or by carrying or mailing them in the appendix to the Convention, except by holding relevant import and export permits. Ivory products, crocodile leather, giant clam and ligaloes, which are common in tourist souvenirs, are products of endangered species in the appendix to the Convention. According to China's Criminal Law and relevant judicial interpretations, the smuggling of precious animal products will be punished by criminal or administrative penalties according to the amount.
