New Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Halls Opened in Zigui
2019-07-05 10:26:26

On June 17, the fifteenth day of May in Chinese lunar calendar, the second Dragon Boat Festival, namely the Grand Dragon Boat Festival was celebrated in Zigui County. On the same day, three intangible cultural heritage halls, named the Liu Zhihua Wood-carving Studio, Zigui Ink-stone Hall and the Mis’ Embroidery Hall respectively, were opened in the Qu Yuan's Hometown Culture Scenic Area, contributing to the inheritance of the Dragon Boat Festival culture in Qu Yuan’s hometown.

In the Liu Zhihua Wood-carving Studio, various wood-carving works featuring the unique culture of the Xiling Gorge area were exhibited to the public. The wood carving art is an intangible cultural heritage project of Zigui County, dedicated to inheriting the Qu Yuan culture. Liu Zhihua, whose wood-carving works are of rich local culture, is the representative inheritor of the Zigui-styled wood carving art, the first “Provincial Master of Arts and Crafts” and a participant of the 14th China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industry Fair on behalf of Hubei Province.

The Longma golden-flower ink-stones displayed in the Zigui Ink-stone Hall, the technique of which is also an intangible cultural heritage project, are made from Silurian rock of Longma River in Zigui County, and the ink-stones used to enjoy a great fame in provinces along the Three Gorges Section of the Yangtze River because of the glimmering golden particles in the stone. Though the brush is no longer as popular as it once was, the technique of Longma Ink-stone making has been successfully inherited after its “disappearance” in the past hundred years from the daily life.

While in the Mis’ Embroidery Hall, visitors could see the whole process of producing Sanlü-style embroidery, which originated in the Han dynasty and gradually declined in the 1970s. It was later discovered in Lepingli, the birthplace of Qu Yuan and identified as a municipal representative intangible cultural heritage project of Yichang. Today, a series of products, such as pillows and cushions of more embroidery techniques and patterns have been developed, as ever won the gold prize of Tourism Commodity Competition of Chinese Characteristics.

Up to now, 10 intangible cultural heritage exhibition studios and halls have been opened in the Qu Yuan's Hometown Culture Scenic Area, including the Dragon Boat Festival Custom Hall, the Qingtan Folk Hall, the Dragon Boat Hall. As Ma shangchao, president of Pinghu Tourism Company introduced, the Qu Yuan's Hometown Culture Scenic Area is the largest cultural tourism area in Yichang and even the Three Gorges area. It will continue to explore and inherit the local intangible cultural heritage for the harmonious combination of intangible cultural heritage and scenic spot development and the building of a cultural tourism brand with unique local cultural elements.
