The reporter learned from the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Zigui County that the county held a long-distance running event and 2022 Dragon Boat Culture Festival in Wangusi Village, Guizhou Town, the “home of Chinese dragon boats”, and “Dragon Head-Raising Day” activities were also organized.
The custom of Dragon Head-Raising Day on the second day of the second lunar month is from the ancient legends. From the awakening of insects to the spring equinox, the first star and the second star of Spica are appeared on the eastern horizon, when the entire body of the dragon is still hidden, only its horns were emerging. Therefore, the day is called “Dragon Head-Raising Day”, also known as the Spring Ploughing, belonging to one of the traditional festivals of China. Legend has it that the dragon wakes up from its slumber on this day, so it is also called the Qinglong Festival.
As the hometown of Qu Yuan (a great patriotic poet in ancient China), more than 60% of the villagers in Wangusi Village, Guizhou Town are surnamed Qu, thus it is known as “the village of Qu family”. On thatday, over 10 celebrations with unique local characteristics were carried out successively, including spectacular cultural performances, a production display of intangible cultural heritage, a dragon head shaving show, a super dragon head kite show, a dragon and lion parade, a dragon boat launching ceremony, a dragon boat tug-of-war, a navel orange picking, a gathering by the descendants of the Qu family to help the rural revitalization, and a bonfire party. The charm of traditional folk culture has been fully bloomed. (Three Gorges Daily, Correspondent Du Yuli)
