The pure electric cruise ship "Three Gorges No 1" attracts foreign media’s attention
2022-04-12 09:06:06

On April 1, “Three Gorges No.1”, a China-developed pure electric cruise ship, becomes the headline in the Buenos Aires Economic News Network in Argentina. The cruise ship is said to be mainly used for local tourism transportation after it is put into operation, which is of great significance for China to strive to achieve the goal of carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

The report illustrates why Yichang is chosen to be the shipbuilding site for “Three Gorges No.1”. If someone is looking for an ideal place to build a large ship, a coastal city might be a good choice. However, due to operational and financial conditions, a site close to a waterway, such as a deep river or canal will be a better choice. This may explain why China’s self-developed pure electric cruise ship “Three Gorges No.1” is built in Yichang, more than 1,000 kilometers away from China’s coastline. The Yangtze River, the third-longest river in the world, flows through several provinces and cities, including Wuhan, and finally flows into the East China Sea.

According to the report, the novelty of the “Three Gorges No.1”is not the size, but the way of propulsion. The cruise ship , equipped with a 7,500 kWh marine power battery, is equivalent to the total battery capacity of more than 100 pure electric vehicles, and can travel for 100 kilometers on a single charge. After being put into operation, it can replace 530 tons of fuel oil every year and reduce harmful gas emissions by more than 1,600 tons. According to manufacturer Zhijiang Xinhui ship company, it is the world’s largest and most intelligent all-electric cruise ship.

The report also says that the “Three Gorges No.1” is also the first electric ship globally to adopt a high-voltage charging and low-voltage power supply scheme, which can efficiently solve the charging problem of high-power ports.

The report pointed out that the cruise ship is a high-tech ship scientific research project of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China and a pilot project of the Ministry of Transport, aiming to promote clean energy and green transportation.
