The Second Conference for the Chasers of Yangtze Finless Porpoise was held on February 17 by Yichang Forestry and Landscape Administration and the Management Office of Yichang Chinese sturgeon Nature Reserve in Hubei Province of the Yangtze River. Nearly 30 participants attended the meeting, including finless porpoise protection experts of the Institute of Aquatics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, staff of the Chinese sturgeon Nature Reserve, chasers of Yangtze finless porpoise and volunteers.
At the conference, Hao Yujiang, associate researcher of the Institute of Aquatics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced the fourth scientific investigation of Yangtze finless porpoises in 2022 and the monitoring of finless porpoises in Yichang Nature Reserve. It is reported that the natural population of Yangtze finless porpoise has recovered from 1012 in 2017. Among them, the number of finless porpoises in Yichang Nature Reserve, Daijiazhou Section, Hukou in Jiangxi Province and some sections of Jiangsu Province increased significantly; The figure of finless porpoise has also shown in some previously distributed blank areas such as Wuhan section. In addition, the number of female and child Yangtze finless porpoise in Yichang, Jingjiangmen, Honghu, Ezhou and other mainstream rivers of the Yangtze River has increased, which is the highest over the years, indicating that the population may have a large recovery in the future.
