Lei Feng (1940-1962), an ordinary yet revered soldier known throughout China for his acts of generosity and selflessness, continues to inspire people across the nation. Over the past decades, activities of learning from Lei Feng have been carried out extensively. On March 2, the Yichang Youth and Children’s Palace, in collaboration with the Yichang Branch of the Yangtze River Shipping Public Security Bureau, organized a volunteer service activity titled “Nurturing the Hearts of Children and Protecting the Yangtze River Together”. The Red Scarf Volunteer Service Team, affiliated with the Yichang Youth and Children’s Palace, participated in the event. Those team members consist of 40 Young Pioneers of China, commonly referred to as “Red Scarves” due to their uniform item, a red scarf.
During the activity, the Young Pioneers recited their pledge, which they had made during their investiture ceremony. Guided by a volunteer representative, they also recited the pledge of volunteer service, reflecting on the qualities of honesty, trustworthiness, and the spirit of helping others embodied by Lei Feng. Shuai Bin, a police officer from the Gezhouba Ship Lock Police Station, delivered a talk with the theme “Protecting Our Mother River Together”, enlightening the children about the importance of preserving the Yangtze River and its endangered species, such as the Yangtze River dolphin. The atmosphere was relaxing and enjoyable, fostering an optimal learning environment. Guided by their instructors, the team members actively participated in a river clean-up activity, distributing informational pamphlets to passersby and serving as young advocates for environmental awareness.
The Red Scarf Volunteer Service Team will continue to carry out volunteer service activities, with the aim of broadening the horizons, nurturing the character, and enhancing the skills of the Young Pioneers in the city. The Team will also strive to promote the spirit of volunteer service, which emphasizes dedication, friendship, mutual assistance, and progress. Furthermore, the Team will encourage its members to actively contribute to the preservation of the Yangtze River, thereby assisting in the development of Yichang as an exemplary city in environmental conservation. Its ultimate goal is to help create a hometown with clearer skies and cleaner waters, featuring harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. (Reporter/Cai Chang; Correspondent/Wang Kehao)
