Public shelters opened for free cooling for residents
2024-07-29 11:13:00
“It’s not only cool here, but also offers drinking water, allowing us to rest comfortably. It's very convenient for the public,” said Mr. Chen, who came to a public shelter at Dongmenkou early on the morning of July 24 after finishing his shopping.

The Dongmenkou public shelter is located at the intersection of Xiling Road No. 1 and Huancheng East Road, covering an area of over 840 square meters. It was created by upgrading and renovating part of the Dongmenkou public shelter project. The original public shelter project was built in 1994 and previously served as a small commodity market. Renovation began in 2020, and it was completed and passed provincial inspection in April 2023. The shelter officially opened to the public in July last year and operates daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Recently, Yichang has continuously issued red high-temperature warnings, making the shelter a popular place for residents to escape the heat. Statistics show that more than 200 residents come here daily to enjoy the free “air conditioning.”

Another cooling spot is the Baimashan public shelter. This is one of the earliest public shelters in Yichang, built in the 1970s. It covers a total area of 1,048 square meters and is equipped with amenities such as a TV, tables and chairs, drinking water dispensers, an emergency medical kit, fitness equipment, and a newspaper and book rack. It also provides free services like hot water and Wi-Fi. The cooling spot is open daily from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. (Reporter/Wang Ying)
