Yichang rising as “Global Capital of Energy Storage”
2026-05-18 09:55:00

According to the China Association for Science and Technology, the 2026 International Energy Storage & Battery Conference & Exhibition will be held in Yichang from May 25 to 27. Once known as the “World’s Hydropower Capital,” then the “Capital of Clean Energy,” and now the “GlobalCapitalofEnergyStorage,” Yichang is steadily emerging as a global energy storage hub.

Yichang is home to two world-class hydroelectric complexes — the Gezhouba Dam and the Three Gorges Dam, with a total installed capacity of 32.475 million kW, over 94% of which comes from clean energy. As the largest phosphate rock base in the Yangtze River Basin, Yichang has retained reserves exceeding 40 billion tons. It boasts an annual production capacity of 1.57 million metric tons of iron phosphate, 680,000 metric tons of lithium iron phosphate and over 300 GWh of new energy batteries, with leading companies such as Brunp, Envision, and Cornex based locally. Besides, the world’s largest pure electric tourist vessel, the “Yangtze Three Gorges No. 1” and the world’s first 10,000-ton pure electric cargo vessel, the “Gezhouba,” have been successively launched in Yichang. Hubei Three Gorges Laboratory has released 12 major scientific and technological achievements, many of which have reached internationally advanced levels.

Yichang’s selection as the host city for the International Energy Storage Battery Conference showcases China’s strong capabilities in the energy storage industry. Yichang is rapidly rising as a “Global Energy Storage Capital.” (Sanxia Daily: Reporter/Lei Chuntao)
