The Yangtze Finless Porpoise Reappears
2019-05-07 09:51:24

On April 25, several finless porpoises jumped out of the water, chasing and frolicking at the lower reach of Gezhouba Dam in Yichang section of the Yangtze River.

The finless porpoise is a flagship species of the Yangtze River ecosystem, as well as one of the most endangered species on the Red List of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). As the “gateway to the Three Gorges”, Yichang has made great efforts to promote the whole protection of the river in recent years. According to the scientific investigation report on the finless porpoises in the river released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in 2018, the number of finless porpoises in Yichang section has increased from 2 or 3 to more than 17.
