On April 22, 10,000 2nd-filial-generation (F2) Chinese sturgeons were released into the Yichang section of the Yangtze River in the “2020 Yangtze Chinese Sturgeons Releasing Activity” held by the China Three Gorges Corporation and the Yichang Municpal People’s Government. This is the 62ndreleasing activity as well as the largest-scale release since 1984 by the Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute (CSRI) of China Three Gorges Corporation, which has released more than 5,030,000 Chinese sturgeons and over 28,000 F2 Chinese sturgeons into the Yangtze River in total, as contributed greatly to the population complement and sustainable growth of the species.
The China Three Gorges Corporation will track down the released Chinese sturgeons with the help of a sonar-based monitoring system. The system covers nearly the 1,800-km section of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and it is the most advanced released Chinese sturgeon monitoring system with the largest coverage and the most comprehensive functions at home.
It is learned that the China Three Gorges Corporation will take the initiative in marine history studies of released Chinese sturgeons this year after the monitoring is completed for a further evaluation of the living status of the released Chinese sturgeons in wild conditions.
