First methanol-powered smart vessel on Yangtze River launched in Yichang
2025-07-30 09:15:00

On July 28, the “Changhang Cargo 006,” a new-generation 130-meter green and smart vessel built to Chuanjiang (Yichang to Sichuan) standards and fully powered by methanol, was successfully launched in Zhijiang County (see photo).

Measuring 130 meters in length, 16.2 meters in beam and 7.4 meters in depth, the ship has a maximum deadweight tonnage of 9,600 tonnes and a cruising range of 3,000 km. It is the first vessel on the Yangtze River to use methanol as its sole fuel. Compared with conventional diesel-powered ships, its green methanol system cuts carbon emissions by 95%, equivalent to avoiding over 5,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually per methanol-fueled medium-speed engine. It also reduces nitrogen oxides by 60% and sulfur oxides by up to 99%, while achieving a 90% replacement rate for conventional marine fuel.
