Gyeongju is located in North Gyeongsang Province in the southeast of South Korea. It is adjacent to the high seas of South Korea in the east, Ulsan Metropolitan City in the west, and Pohang City in the north. As the second largest city in South Korea, it covers an area of 1324 square kilometers, with a population of 280000. The city attracts as many as eight million visitors or above each year, for it is not only a famous historical city in South Korea (the site of the Silla Kingdom’s capital), but also a world-renowned cultural tourism city. Home to historical relics built in ancient Silla (57BC-935AD), world cultural heritages can be founded everywhere in the city, so it is honored as a historical museum without roof.
With extraordinary natural environment, Gyeongju is surrounded by mountains on three sides except for the east on the ocean side. Apart from tourism, the animal husbandry and fishery become one of the pillar industries of the city. It is the largest Korean cattle breeding base in South Korea, producing the best beef. It neighbors Ulsan City, the automobile city, and Pohang City, the steel city with well-developed auto parts industry, steel-related parts and materials industry. As a long-established city with profound culture and beautiful natural environment, it is favored by international exhibitions and has been a backbone of the economy of Gyeongju.
Boasting convenient transportation, Gyeongju is a transportation hub connecting all directions, such as the Seoul-Busan High-speed Railway and Expressway, and the Donghae Nambu Line, serving as a logistics and transportation center of South Korea. It takes only two hours to Seoul from Gyeongju by high-speed railway.
There is one industrial park, eight local industrial parks, five industrial and agricultural parks, and more than 1000 enterprises in Gyeongju, and in its industrial structure, agriculture and aquaculture, industry and mining, and service industry and others accounting 34%, 15% and 51% respectively. Additionally, there are 164 schools in the city, including Gyeongju University and another three universities.
