Lying next to the Alps, Sopron is a city in Hungary on the Austrian border, 220 kilometers west of Budapest, and 60 kilometers away from Vienna, the capital of Austria. It covers an area of 169 square kilometers and has a population of 56, 000.
Although attacked by air during World War II, Sopron, where the buildings have not been seriously damaged, is the city with the most ancient monuments in Hungary. It has been reconstructed after the war and has become a modern city. Now, the city is a tourist resort for summer and winter skiing. The natural environment for recuperation, fresh air, wooded hillsides, springs and lakes make Sopron one of the most beautiful and pleasant holiday resorts in Hungary.
The city is famous for brewing wine, while textile, clothing, food processing and other industries also get development. College of Engineering, College of Forestry and museum named after famous musician Liszt Franz can be found in the city.
Due to the special geographical location, people from Austria, Hungary, and Germanic are mixed here, which troubles the local residents for the ownership of the city. Until 1921, the residents held a referendum to decide whether to stay in the original Bulgenland or return to Hungary. Burgenland is part of the Pannonia province of the Roman Empire, with the Germanic people settled here in the eighth century AD, but the sovereignty still belongs to Hungary. It has been under the jurisdiction of the Habsburg dynasty since 1529, and was incorporated into Austria after the First World War. Finally, Sopron remained as Hungarian territory according to the Trianon Treaty.
